about

Kenyan-South African, multi-disciplinary artist BŪJIN and UK-born now South Africa-based Jumping Back Slash share their new single “Angel” - a track that features BŪJIN’s delicate vocals over the top of a hypnotic, pounding beat from Jumping Back Slash that is reminiscent of Bjork. The track explores themes of co-dependency within relationships.

Speaking about the track, BŪJIN say’s “I guess Angel is about that thing. And wanting it from someone who’s probably not the best for you but wanting that thing at all costs because the feeling is transcendental. Like becoming an angel of sorts...
Like Lauryn Hill said, ‘that thing, that thing, that thiiiiing.”

Jumping Back Slash shares “Angel was maybe the last song put together on the album and I think the vocal was from a session on a different song, although I don’t remember what. Dani’s line ‘This isn’t geometry…nothing more than a co-dependency’ kept nagging away at me so I played around with a few ideas for a tune. Often at the end of projects I tend to make beats or tunes that are cannibalised from other tunes on the record or resampled or reused and recycled…this tends to happen when the musical and conceptual aspects coalesce…having a more ‘use the whole animal’ approach makes tracks which can tie the album together and this is one like that. It also smacks hard.”

The single is taken from their collaborative album, out 10th November 2023, via Jamz Supernova’s Future Bounce label. An album that feels remarkably tactile and textural, where icy atmospherics nestle up against crisp, crackling beats, and where their vocals float through it all like an engulfing fog. It’s a record that is as multi-layered as it is multi-genre, spanning bottom-heavy minimal electronic, avant-pop and leftfield soul.
